Poetic Analysis

In my eyes, poems are the art form of language. Emotions, thoughts, and ideas are sewn together in a worded form that some can’t even begin to understand.  When the assignment was given to me, I knew exactly what I would write about.  The only problem was how I would go about writing these three poems.

The first poem I wrote for this assignment was my identity poem. For this one, an acrostic poem made the most sense. This way all the attributes that made me an introvert could be highlighted. Some of the letters in the word introvert gave me a hard time but after speaking to my friends about my character I got it all worked out. Even though this was my shortest poem, it wasn’t the easiest one to write about.

The easiest poem for me to write was the one about a current social event. I chose to write about the #MeToo Movement. This is such an important topic that spoke to me at the moment. Even though #MeToo is a current event, it is connected to things that have been happening since forever. People who have been sexually harassed/assaulted are finally speaking up. There is nothing new about sexual harassment but the victims having a voice is new. Although I cannot personally relate, I have witnessed the breakdown of a person who has pretended that nothing was wrong. Since sexual harassment isn’t a light topic, it felt right to not write about it like if I knew exactly what the trauma felt like. So that’s how this poem ended up in a third person point of view.

This last poem was the hardest for me to write about. The idea was crystal clear in my mind, but how exactly was it going to be expressed was a struggle. The idea was to write about an object but in such a way that it wasn’t clear until the ending. All through the creation of this poem, the line “the pen is mightier than the sword” kept running through my head. The tricky part was turning the sword into the pen, finding a common ground between the two. I got the most help on this poem, my friend would give me ideas for me to feed on, but in the end, it still had to fall into place. The first line and the last line came to me with ease, but the middle was still missing even when the rest was figured out. The common ground between the pen and a sword proved to be almost impossible to find. When the middle finally came to me, the whole poem blended together into something that could be understood.

This assignment was only a bit difficult when it came to putting thought into an idea. Because poems are so raw, beautiful, and meaningful I didn’t want mine to fall short. These three poems had to represent something, and I made sure it did.
